Sustaining an innovative work environment

When taking on a big task like developing a game, project and team management is key. This involves implementing efficient scheduling and clearly outlining the tasks that need to be completed to achievement project milestones. The better this is done, the more time spent productively will increase. Defining a clear task list and schedule can minimise bottlenecks and alleviate stress amongst a development team. It can help people plan and manage their time effectively, as well as keep members be informed of the work that is required and the progress of the project.

Another important part of managing and sustaining an innovative work environment, is promoting a safe and positive environment, where workers are valued and feel encouraged. This means being open to collaboration and suggestions from all members of the development team. It also includes commending member for their work and working with them to reach the teams goals. By doing this you can invite opportunities for growth and innovation into the workspace.

The key to project management and group work is communication. Without communication a project and its team can suffer, so by scheduling regular team meetings or encouraging team members to approach project leaders or other members with concerns, you promote positive communication. For example, myself and the Planet Unknown team have daily scrums to discuss our tasks and requirements for each day, this practice is extremely helpful, especially now that we're heading into major production.
